“A Little Story”
Peaceful and pretty, secluded and quiet
They thought it was a perfect campsite
So they parked and pitched up their tents
And settled down there for the night
Laughing and joking around the camp fire
They drank whiskey and sang stupid songs
Talking about how they’d change the world
And how to right its many wrongs
Then out of the woods he approached them
A hunched, stumbling, old stranger
Seeing his face and his wrinkles
They didn’t think he could be any danger
They offered him food and sat him down
Gave him a stiff drink and a smoke
He ate his meal quickly in silence
And then ever so slowly he spoke
“I’ve just gotta say, ‘n I really do mean this
Y’all have been mighty nice ‘n kind
Folks as friendly ‘n pleasant as y’all
Nowadays are real hard to find
So now I’m gonna tell a little story
Guess it’s more of a friendly warning
This ain’t a real good place to set up camp
Maybe y’all should move on in the morning
Cos over there in them dark woods
Maybe fifty or so years ago
Some folks had a real nasty time of it
Trust me, I sure as hell should know
See, two young lovers were out camping
Pretty much just like you guys
But as they were getting nice and cosy
They heard some God-awful cries
They followed the sound of the yelling
As though lost in some kinda dream
But it turned out to be a real nightmare
And they both had to stifle a scream
A couple of bored, restless devils
Were out there fooling around
Growling ‘n a grappling with each other
They tumbled down on to the ground
All red ‘n scaly with horns on their heads
Them kids had never seen such a sight
Wrestling around like hogs in the mud
In the cold, dark still of the night
But then their contest turned nasty
They cussed, screeched, clawed ‘n bit
Watching this unholy, mad scuffle
Sent the poor girl right into a fit
Them devils, they heard the commotion
And turned to see who was near
The boy tried hard to drag her away
But she was frozen real stiff with fear
They grabbed a hold of his sweetheart
And the boy, he put up such a fight
Lord, how he tried to save her
He fought them with all his might
‘Cept them devils were just too big ‘n strong
The young lad was really no match
Knocked down, broken ‘n bloodied
As they ran away with their catch
But this story’s not as sad as it seems
My gal, she still comes back to visit me
Whenever I want her, I just have to ask
I made a pact with them devils, y'all see
I go out ’n find a lonesome campsite
And when they’re asleep I wander in
I’ve gotta be real quiet ‘n real careful
As I peel off their precious skin
See, them devils just love the smell of us
Don’t blame them, cos they stink real bad
Oh but listen to me, I’m a rambling on
I bet y’all think I’m quite mad!
Now there’s no need for y’all to worry
I’ve really quite enjoyed my stay
I told my little story just to pass some time
Hey, why y’all running away?”
